Link O' The Day...

peristaltor points out that if John McCain insists on calling himself a "maverick," he (and his handlers) might want to learn a little bit about the word's origin. I had no idea myself where the word came from, and now that I know, I gotta say: McCain keeps using that word. I do not think it means what he thinks it means.

Interesting to folks who care about politics and folks who find language fascinating. I know I have a few of both on my flist.

reneeblaine, my sweetie whom you have not gotten to meet yet, is a horse person (she was very amused by your recent horse post BTW).

She pointed out that in their world "maverick" is a pejorative term for a wild and uncontrolled horse that's a danger to the herd & needs to be broken and (in the case of males) castrated before healthy interaction can occur. Something to think about. :-)

Check my LJ btw, you might find what I just posted about the Neo-Con connection to the wave of anti-Darwinism over the last decade interesting.

The Maverick family wants McCain to stop using that word.

If McCain shouldn't use the word for one of its several meanings, one of which means independence, then homosexuals shouldn't use the word gay for one of its several meanings, one of which means homosexual.

Interesting to folks who care about politics and folks who find language fundamental.
