Back in Atlanta!

It's snowing outside. Also, a coworker just killed a black widow in the office. Red mark on the abdomen and all.

I remember driving through Georgia with my parents on the way to Florida about 40 years ago. It was snowing fairly heavily.
2 things stuck in my mind. The red seeping through some lighter patches of snow from the earth, and the line of cars with Ontario plates in the right hand lane. In the left lane were lots of southern american plates speeding by then spinning into the median.

The weather report says snow Friday, which means cea won't be driving due to the number of people who live here that have no clue how to drive in snow.

I am going to assume you mean a spider. Otherwise I will be kinda upset. :)

Yes, a black widow spider. I don't know of many black widows with red hourglasses on their tummies who aren't spiders. :)

Well it seems black widow spiders don't like snow either.

Black widow spiders are cool stuff. I used to catch 'em for fun. Got bit once -- a medium level envenomation. Entertaining, for certain definitions of "entertaining."

Are they native to Atlanta?

I have no idea if they're native or not, though the one we killed seemed quite at home in the break room.

So how bad is a black widow spider bite, anyway?

Well, as my lawyer says, "depends," but basically there are three levels of envenomation. Low level is just grumpy-spider bite. Swelling and sore. Hardly any venom, mostly just "fang-off, buster."

Medium level can manifest in a variety of ways, but in my case, it was intense abdominal cramps (like watching a junkie curled up, shaking and sweating) that lasted half a day, liquifaction and expulsion of a lot of things you wish would remain solid or at least inside your body, and if you're very young, possible other things including heart palps and respiratory arrest. I was in my teens and v-e-r-y lucky.

High venomation is a black widow that wants to make sure you never fuck with her or anyone else again. Pretty much every voluntary action goes involuntary, heart palps, and respiratory arrest, followed by your own drawer in the hospital basement. I believe there is enough time to administer antivenom, if you've got it handy or can get to it fast. This happened to my grandmother, but she got to the hospital in time, so she was able to come back home after a day or two (your body can pass the venom pretty quickly if it doesn't kill you).

Now, this is all from memory, as I haven't had to fuck with black widows for quite a few years (I no longer live in Arizona), but we have brown widows up here, and they are non-native, so I have no trouble at all squashing those fuckers.

Plus I'm motivated: "This is for what your cousins did to my family, you eight-legged bastard!"

Enjoy your time there. ^_^ Atlanta is a very pretty city. Too bad all the dang streets are named Peachtree. >.<

No getting bit. Black Widows are cool from that 20 foot perspective (or through glass).
