Firedancing on the Beach

Last night, a group of friends invited us out to Clearwater Beach to meet some friends of theirs who were planning to do some firedancing. The evening was nothing short of perfect, so we ended up hanging out with them at the beach for several hours.

One of the disappointments of last year's trip to San Francisco was that Shelly and I were unable to go out with altenra to see some firedancing in San Francisco; it's stunningly beautiful to watch.

Hey, what camera do you use?

Actually, those shots were taken on my old, not terribly good Canon Digital Elph (it's a PowerShot S330). I was kind of annoyed; one of the limitations of the camera is terrible low-light sensitivity. The shots were made with a 1-second exposure, hand-held as I didn't think to bring my tripod. They're not bad for what they are, but a more recent digital camera would've given much better results.

I'm doing research on digital cameras now...any recommendations, or thoughts? I'm looking seriously at the Lumix FZ10.

I'm not terribly up on the current state of the art in digital cameras, though the Canon cameras, particularly the Canon SLR models like the EOS Rebel Digital, are extremely highly regarded in the digital and film-based communities alike. One of the firedancers had a Canon digital, and took some absolutely breathtaking shots.

Next year, or maybe the year after that. An $800 starting price camera is *so* not in reach for me this year.

*spank, spank, spank, spank* That would have been so cool to see!

These are some of the coolest pictures of yours that don't have nudity that I've ever seen! (Which is to say that I'm deeply disappointed...) ;-)

Awesome! I like the reflections on the water.

I love taking photos of fire dancers. Need to find some in MA...

If you had wanted to see firedancing in SF...
...you should have just asked. Every Sunday night in the alley up the street from us. Our friends have a troupe and practice there.

Re: If you had wanted to see firedancing in SF...
Where where?
May. 24th, 2004 05:47 pm (UTC)
It's in SOMA, the alley at Clementina and 8th on the right side of the street where Clementina dead-ends into Sumner. Most Sunday nights from
about dusk 'till a couple hours later.
Go ask feyandstrange or digitalsidhe for details. No real rules or set schedule, just show up sometime after dark and freaks will appear. Goes until around 22:00-ish

And didn't their mothers not teach them not to play with fire. :P
